Renting a private house or flat

Properties are usually let through Real Estate Agents or directly through private landlords. Rental vacancies are typically advertised in daily newspapers, especially on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the “To Let” and “Accommodation Vacant” sections. You can also call into a Real Estate office to see their list of available properties.

A “lease” or “residential tenancy agreement” is signed when you agree to rent a property for a period of time. Do not sign a lease unless you fully understand the terms and conditions in the document, as it becomes legally binding after you sign it.

You may have to pay a rental bond (often four weeks rent), which is refunded when you leave the property, provided you leave it in a clean and undamaged condition with no rent owing. Rent is usually paid two or four weeks in advance.
